According to mythological beliefs, there was a demon named Tarkasur. He did severe penance to please Lord Brahma and get the boon, after which Lord Brahma appeared. The demon asked for the boon of becoming immortal from Lord Brahma. He told the demon that every human that takes birth has to die one day. This upset Tarkasur but he asked for the boon again with cleverness saying that he must only die at the hands of the son of Lord Shiva.

He asked for such a boon as he thought that Lord Shiva will never marry and have a son, and this will make him immortal. Lord Brahma granted him this boon. After this, he started inflicting horrific violence on the people. This ignited a feeling of fear in people. Then all the victims went to Lord Shiva and prayed that he saves them from the atrocities of Tarakasur.

This is when Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati and she gave birth to a son who was named Skanda, or Kartikeya. Then Goddess Parvati took the form of Skandmata to train her son Skanda to fight the war with Tarakasur. After taking training from his mother, Lord Shiva’s son Skanda/Karthikeya killed the demon Tarakasura and freed all the people from his atrocities forever.
