To think too much about (something): to put too much time into thinking about or analysing (something) in a way that is more harmful than helpful is overthinking.

For a few people, it is commonly very difficult to get over their own actions, or take decisions, or move on from a certain situation. So they start thinking about that more and more to overcome that situation. Generally, they are unaware about the fact that they are victim of overthinking. It clouds their minds, judgment and destroys any semblance of happiness their already overworked minds could muster.

Two Forms of Overthinking

Overthinking comes in two forms:

  1. Ruminating about the past and
  2. Worrying about the future.

Overthinking involves dwelling on how bad you feel and thinking about all the things you have no control over. It won’t help you develop new insight.

Signs that you’re an Overthinker.

Everyone overthinks sometimes. But some people do it more frequently than others. Some of these individuals could have anxiety disorders, but not everyone does.
So there are some signs that indicates that you’re an overthinker:

  1. I have trouble sleeping because it feels like my brain won’t shut off.
  2. I ask myself a lot of “what if…” questions.
  3. I spend a lot of time thinking about the hidden meaning in things people say or events that happen.
  4. I rehash conversations I had with people in my mind and think about all the things I wished I had or hadn’t said.
  5. I constantly relive my mistakes.
  6. When someone says or acts in a way I don’t like, I keep replaying it in my mind.
  7. I relive embarrassing moments in my head repeatedly.
  8. Sometimes I’m not aware of what’s going on around me because I’m dwelling on things that happened in the past or worrying about things that might happen in the future.
  9. I spend a lot of time worrying about things I have no control over.
  10. I can’t get my mind off my worries.
    Unfortunately, those plagued with the disease are so used to living with it, they’ve given up hope on finding a cure. They’re used to spending hours upon hours wondering, pondering and obsessing over insignificant details.

While we may never find a cure for overthinking, there are ways to hamper some of the symptoms. While we can’t cure every worry and every ailing thought, we can try to provide some relief for such cases.
