Vrat Katha (Fasting Narrative)

According to Hindu mythology, when Ravana kidnapped Mother Sita and took her to Lanka during Lord Rama’s exile, Lord Rama decided to travel to Lanka with Sugriva’s permission. The ocean was getting in the way of ascending Lanka. There was no obvious way forward. Lord Shri Ram, concerned, asked Laxman how they could proceed. Then Laxman mentioned the Vakdalabhya Muni hermitage, which is only a short distance away. He said, we should ask him for advice on how to continue.

Shri Ram and Lakshman then traveled to the hermitage of Vakdalbhya Muni. He saluted him and then asked him a question. Munivar said of Vijaya Ekadashi, ‘O Ram, keep a fast on the Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of Falgun month, through this fast you would undoubtedly be able to cross the ocean and win victory by defeating Ravana.’ Shri Ram then observed the Ekadashi fast with his troops, as described by Munivar, and built a bridge over the ocean before marching on to Lanka. After that, Lord Rama and Ravana fought a war in which Ravana was defeated. Since then, this Ekadashi has been known as Vijaya Ekadashi. Arjuna had been informed of this by Lord Shri Krishna.
