Significance of Nag Panchami

  • Nag Panchami is considered the day of worshipping snakes. It is celebrated in the Shravan month, which is the heart and soul of Lord Shiva. Snake resides around the neck of Lord Shiva, therefore, worshipping snakes on this day is very effective.
  • According to astrology, Nag Panchami is most suitable for people with Kaal Sarp Dosha or Shani and Rahu Dosh in their horoscope. Performing Rudrabhishek, worshipping Lord Shiva, and taking measures to rectify the above-mentioned Dosh on this day is considered beneficial.
  • Worshipping on Nag Panchami also provides benefits if Rahu and Ketu are present in the horoscope.
  • Worshipping on Nag Panchami gives good fruits to people born in Ashlesha Nakshatra.
  • If the fifth house is afflicted in the birth chart, or there is a problem related to children, or if Kaal Sarp Dosh is in the house of children, snakes should be worshipped on Nag Panchami.

Rituals of Performing Worship on Nag Panchami

  • Eight serpents are primarily worshipped on Nag Panchami, i.e. Ananta, Vasuki, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Kulir, Karkat, and Shankh.
  • A day before Nag Panchami i.e., on Chaturthi Tithi, eat only once a day.
  • On the morning of Nag Panchami, wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Observe a fast.
  • Make snakes on both sides of the door of your house with cow dung on the day of Nag Panchami.
  • Offer curd, Durva, Gandha, Kusha, Akshat, flowers, Modak, and Malpua, etc. to this serpent/snake.
  • Serve food to Brahmins on this day and observe a fast to eradicate the fear of snakes. (However, if you cannot feed Brahmins at home, keep aside Dakshina in their name and donate it in a temple.)
  • Worshipping and bathing a snake with milk on this day also helps in overcoming the fear of snakes.
  • Turmeric must be included in the items of worship.
  • Worship Nag Devta by offering turmeric, red vermilion, rice, and flowers to him.
  • Then mix unboiled milk, ghee, and sugar in a vessel and offer it to Nag Devta.
  • Offer Dakshina to a snake charmer if possible.
  • Chant this Mantra on this day:अनन्तं वासकिं शेषं पद्मकम्बलमेव च।तथा कर्कोटकं नागं नागमश्वतरं तथा।। धृतराष्ट्रंं शंखपालं कालाख्यं तक्षकं तथा। पिंगलञ्च महानागं प्रणमामि मुहुर्मुरिति।।
  • Cooking anything in an iron pan is considered forbidden on this day.
  • Apart from this, make an emulsion of wheat and milk and offer it with roasted gram, paddy slag, and roasted barley to the snakes with devotion.
  • Listen to the legend of Nag Panchami after worshipping. Break the fast in the evening.

Important Do’s and Don’ts On Nag Panchami

  • Plowing the field is prohibited on Nag Panchami.

  • Apart from this, you can also offer milk, paddy, and durva on this day. If possible, buy snakes from snake charmer on this day and set them free.
