Bhai dooj 2021
Bhaiya dooj, Bhai teeka, bhaubeej, Bhai phonta, Bhai Dooj is a festival celebrated in Hinduism. It falls on the second day of Diwali or the day after Govardhan/Vishkarma day. Bhai dooj celebrates the bond between brother and sister. This day is different from Raksha Bandhan which also celebrates the love and bond of a brother and sister. In Raksha Bandhan, a sister ties a Raksha band on her brother’s hand who in turn vows to protect her and gives her a loving gift. In Bhaiya dooj, the sister applies a teeka / Vermillion on the brother’s forehead, and both exchange sweets.
In the Southern part of the country, this day is celebrated as Yama Dwitiya.
Bhai Dooj will be observed on 6th November 2021
There are pujas namely ‘Gajanan puja’ and ‘Sarvgraha Puja’ that can be performed on this day to strengthen the bond between the brother and sister. The sister can also perform these pujas to ensure the wellbeing of her brother. Lord Gajanan Puja helps in elevating any hindrances coming in the path of the addressee.
Sarvgraha Puja destroys all the enemies and any kind of suffering faced by the addressee due to the negative influence of the badly placed planets.
The legend associated with Bhai dooj
According to a popular legend in Hindu mythology, after slaying the evil demon Narakasura, Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who gave him a warm welcome with sweets and flowers. She also affectionately applied tilaka on Krishna’s forehead. Some belief this to be the origin of the festival.
On the occasion, sisters perform aarti for their brother and apply a red tika on the brother’s forehead. This tika ceremony on the occasion of Bhai Dooj signifies the sister’s sincerest prayers for the long and happy life of her brother and treats them with gifts. In return, elder brothers bless their sisters and may treat them also with gifts or cash.
The sister whose brother lives far away from her and can not go to her house sends her sincerest prayers for the long and happy life of her brother through the moon god. She performs aarti for the moon.
